Elective Requirements
Electives are courses that students can choose to take as part of their degree pro gram but that are not specifically required by the pro gram's core curriculum. These courses offer students the flexibility to explore interests outside of their major or to delve deeper into specific areas within their field of study.
Key points about electives include:
1. Freedom of Choice
Electives allow students to tailor their academic experience to their interests, career goals, or academic strengths. They can choose from a wide range of courses offered by UBC , including those in different departments or disciplines.
2. Exploration and Diversification
Electives provide opportunities for students to explore subjects beyond their major, potentially discovering new passions or gaining interdisciplinary perspectives. They can also help students develop a well-rounded skill set and knowledge base.
3. Depth or Breadth
Depending on their preferences, students may use electives to either deepen their understanding of a specific topic related to their major or to broaden their knowledge by exploring diverse subjects.
4. Meeting Requirements
While electives are typically optional, degree programs may have specific requirements regarding the number of elective credits students need to complete in order to graduate. These requirements ensure that students receive a comprehensive education while still allowing for flexibility in course selection.
5. Prerequisites and Restrictions
Some elective courses may have prerequisites or restrictions, such as requiring certain prior coursework or being open only to students in particular programs or years of study. Students should review course descriptions and consult with advisors to ensure they meet any requirements or restrictions before enrolling in electives.
What are my elective requirements?
Elective requirements differ slightly depending on which year you entered the program, which option you choose to complete, and whether you entered as a direct entry student in Year 1 or as a transfer student in Year 2 or Year 3.
